FAQ

Laser hair reduction targets the pigment in hair follicles using concentrated light energy. The laser heats the follicle, damaging it and inhibiting future hair growth. Multiple sessions are typically needed for optimal results.

Yes, laser hair reduction is generally safe when performed by a trained professional. The procedure is FDA-approved and has been widely used for years. However, some patients may experience temporary side effects like redness, swelling, or mild discomfort.

The number of sessions varies depending on factors such as hair type, skin tone, and the area being treated. On average, most patients require 6-8 sessions spaced several weeks apart for optimal results.

Under the FDA’s definition, “permanent” hair reduction is the long-term, stable reduction in the number of hairs regrowing after a treatment regime.

Laser hair reduction significantly reduces hair growth, and many people experience long-term results. However, some hair may regrow over time, typically finer and lighter. Maintenance sessions may be needed to keep the area smooth.

Advancements in laser technology have made it possible to treat a wide range of skin tones. However, the effectiveness can vary based on the contrast between hair color and skin tone. A consultation with Besr dermatologist  Dr Sandeep Gupta will help determine the best approach for each individual.

During the procedure, you may feel a slight stinging sensation as the laser targets the hair follicles. Afterward, the treated area may appear slightly red or swollen, similar to a mild sunburn. These effects typically subside within a few hours to a day. Sun protection and avoiding certain skincare products may be recommended post-treatment.

As per US FDA definition, permanent hair reduction is the long-term reduction in the hair growing after a treatment regimen. Many patients experience partial regrowth of hair on their treated areas in the years following their last treatment. This means that although laser treatment with these devices will permanently reduce the total number of a body hair, they will not result in permanent removal of the all hair.

Hair has a well described growth cycle in humans

  1. Anagen: active growth phase
  2. Catagen: transition period.
  3. Telogen : Fall Stage.

Hair is fully loaded with melanin only in anagen phase and this only is susceptible to injury as laser targets the melanin. Only a percentage of hair are in anagen phase at one particular time. Rest is in catagen and telogen. Spacing between sessions is done on the basis of hair cycle, particularly telogen duration.

Telogen duration varies from 6 to 24 weeks in different body areas;

An ideal candidate for LHR

  1. Coarse dark terminal hair
  1. Absence of underlying hormonal imbalance.
  1. Realistic expectations.: Note LHR means that it would ensure delay of growth, decrease number of hair and make hair finer.

Before the procedure

  1. No bleaching 2 months before and after the LHR. So mostly maintenance phase only bleaching can be done.
  2. Retinoids and other lightening agents to be avoided 5 days before and after.
  3. As hormones imbalance may be involved in increased hair growth, tests may be done before, during or after LHR sessions.
  4. Many tablets or creams are also responsible for increased hair growth. you must tell any medicines/creams you use; derm may ask you to stop them, if possible.
  5. Injections or powders used in gyms for enhancing muscle mass can include steroids. Please stop them and avoid in future too for best results
  6. Areas in vicinity of moles and tattoos (around 1 cm) shall be avoided to prevent burns.

Gap between sessions: varies depending on different body areas;

Gray hair is not reduced by LHR. As black hair reduces, you may see a proportionate increase in grey hair on area.

Procedure

  1. Marking the area to do.
  2. Shaving- after a cleansing gel, It is done with a new razor or an electric machine.
  3. Precooling: it is necessary as hair are located deep inside and we want laser to affect only pigmented portion of hair (deep 2-4 mm) and not superficial skin(epidermis)
  4. During procedure; around 15 by 15 mm size of handpiece (part of machine in contact with skin) shall be moved over the marked area.
  5. Mild sensation of heat may be felt. if intolerable, settings can be modified to a level where efficacy and comfort go hand in hand. Please tell operating doctor/staff accordingly.

Post procedure: Redness, swelling are expected. Superficial or deep burns causing pigmentary changes are possible side effect.

As a dermatologist, I, Dr Sandeep Gupta, am excited to introduce the Motus AX laser system to our clinic—a cutting-edge technology that makes laser hair reduction safer, more comfortable, and effective for a wider range of skin types.

The Motus AX laser, which uses Moveo technology with an Alexandrite laser, has certain advantages over diode and long-pulsed Nd:YAG lasers, particularly when it comes to treating Asian skin (skin types III-V). Here is a breakdown that would be relevant

Wavelength Differences and Safety on Brown Skin

   – Nd:YAG Laser (1064 nm): Traditionally preferred for darker skin types because of its longer wavelength, which penetrates deeper into the skin while minimizing absorption by melanin. This reduces the risk of hyperpigmentation and burns on darker skin.

   – Diode Laser (800-810 nm): Also commonly used for skin types III-V due to deeper penetration and relatively low melanin absorption. However, discomfort is a concern with diode lasers.

   – Motus AX (755 nm Alexandrite): Typically, Alexandrite lasers (755 nm) are avoided for darker skin due to higher melanin absorption and a higher risk of burns. However, Moveo technology in the Motus AX mitigates this by delivering energy in a controlled, gradual manner, reducing the chance of overheating the skin and minimizing adverse effects like burns and hyperpigmentation.

  1. Moveo Technology:

   – Energy Delivery: Unlike traditional single-pulse delivery lasers, Moveo technology in the Motus AX delivers energy in a sweeping, contact-based motion. This ensures:

     – Uniform energy delivery to the target hair follicle with minimal energy loss.

     – Lower peak temperatures, reducing the risk of burning or injuring the epidermis, especially important for Asian skin with higher melanin content.

   – Safety: The gradual energy build-up reduces the risk of hot spots or uneven energy absorption, providing safer outcomes for darker skin types. This can make Alexandrite lasers, which are traditionally less safe for brown skin, usable on Asian skin with improved safety.

  1. Treatment Efficacy:

   – Speed: Alexandrite lasers, including the Motus AX, are known for fast hair removal, especially in larger areas. The Moveo handpiece allows quick, smooth motions without the typical discomfort associated with Alexandrite.

   – Better Efficacy on Fine Hair: Alexandrite lasers have traditionally been more effective on finer and lighter hair types compared to Nd:YAG and Diode lasers. This makes the Motus AX particularly effective for treating areas with a mix of coarse and finer hair.

  1. Comfort:

   – Pain Reduction: The Moveo handpiece is contact-cooled, reducing discomfort during the procedure. This is a major advantage over Nd:YAG and diode lasers, which are known to be more painful, especially on sensitive areas. The contact cooling and gradual heat build-up reduce the patient’s perception of pain, offering a more comfortable experience.

  1. Reduced Downtime and Side Effects:

   – Because of the controlled energy delivery, the risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) and other side effects is lower compared to traditional Alexandrite lasers, aligning it more closely with the safety profile of Nd:YAG and diode lasers, which are typically preferred for Asian skin.

 In Summary:

For Asian skin, the Motus AX laser offers a significant advantage by combining the speed and efficacy of an Alexandrite laser with the safety of Moveo technology. This allows it to be used on brown skin types without the usual risks associated with Alexandrite lasers, such as burns or pigmentation changes. The improved patient comfort, faster treatment times, and reduced risk of side effects make it a competitive option over traditional diode and Nd:YAG lasers for laser hair reduction.
